Homemade Non-Toxic Cleaning Products

Recently, I made a Facebook post sharing my confusion about people being afraid of getting a virus while they are using and spraying toxic products to help sanitize instead of using simple homemade non-toxic cleaners.
After, I received a large response in my inbox asking for advice and tips on homemade non-toxic cleaners. I decided to write an entire blog to help those looking for easy and cheap homemade non-toxic cleaners.
If you missed my post I said,
“People are so freaked out over a virus that they go in public to buy out all the TP and water, they start using toxic hand sanitizer, they spray everything around them with toxic disinfectant sprays and inject themselves and their children with toxic chemicals which compromise the immune system.
Am I understanding this correctly?
While people are being afraid of a virus, they are compromising their immune system with chemicals.
Let’s focus more on how to strengthen your immune system than stress about it, which is another thing that weakens your immune system! “
In this blog post I will share with you the most popular cleaning products used and why they are toxic and harmful to you and your kids. Lastly, I will share with you my two favorite non-toxic household cleaners we use daily! For an additional immune system boost, you can check out Our Happy Healthy Homestead’s Homemade Elderberry Syrup here!

Are your cleaning products toxic or non-toxic?
You can read the toxic ingredient on the back of your disinfecting sprays and wipes. However, most people don’t understand what the label is saying. Here is an easy to read ingredient breakdown from EWG (Environmental Working Group) based on an A-F scale. A is the lowest concern and F is the highest concern to our health and the environment.
Also, did you know in order for Clorox to be effective, the surface you spray or wipe needs to be wet for at least 4 minutes to kill 99.9% of the bacteria that the label claims.
When is the last time you wiped and sprayed anything for 4 minutes? Probably, never!
If you’re looking to boost your immune system, the first step is to avoid harmful toxins. Throw outpour toxic cleaning products. They are easy to replace and the homemade non-toxic cleaner alternatives are cheaper.

Effective Homemade Non-Toxic Cleaning Products

The two most effective natural disinfectants are vinegar and hydrogen peroxide.
We have been using these two products to clean and sanitize our home for years. Homemade Vinegar spray and Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide Spray are multipurpose cleaners and can be used to clean tables, counters, showers, tubs, toilets, ovens, microwaves, glass and windows.
The white vinegar you buy at the store is usually a 5% concentration of acetic acid. The 5% kills about 80 % of germs. You can buy higher acetic acid concentration to up its germ-killing power on amazon.
Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is water with an extra oxygen molecule. Unlike, chlorine bleach, Hydrogen Peroxide breaks down into oxygen and water and is non-toxic to the environment. It is sold in 3% concentration bottles at the store. You can buy a spray top to screw on to the bottle or you can buy a dark glass bottle spray bottle and pour the cleaner into it. If you do use your own bottle be sure to store Hydrogen Peroxide out of the sun and in a dark bottle.
You can use either, Hydrogen peroxide or Vinegar when you are cleaning. If you are sanitizing, hydrogen and peroxide are even stronger germ killers together.
TIP: If you use them as a one-two combo, do not mix vinegar and hydrogen peroxide together in a bottle, it cuts their germ-killing power. When you use them one after the other it become more effective than Both PRODUCTS by themselves and the combo is better than bleach!
Try this Homemade Non-Toxic Disinfectant:
1. Spray and wipe hard surfaces with your white vinegar mix.
2. Spray the same surfaces with a three per cent hydrogen peroxide.
You can do either disinfectant first. For best results, apply one immediately after the other and let the surface air dry — don’t wipe them away.
NOTES: To do normal cleaning you don’t not need to spray both and let air dry. You can spray one and wipe away crumbs, glass smears etc.

How to Make Homemade Non-Toxic Hydrogen Peroxide Spray:
It comes ready to use no need to mix any other ingredients. SO SIMPLE!
I recommend buying a food grade hydrogen peroxide bottle and screwing on a spray top or buying a glass amber spray bottle. Both can be found easily on amazon or your. grocery stores.
TIP* It is best if it is food grade Hydrogen Peroxide because it doesn’t contain any stabilizers.
Stabilizers are additives and can be toxic or unwanted.
To start I recommend buying this Food Grade Hydrogen peroxide and this set of 2 glass amber bottles to put it in. I put one bottle downstairs and one upstairs for convenience. You can just buy a spray top to screw on to the bottle. However, I prefer to have it in glass and to have two bottles available for cleaning our house!
